Crafting Harpsichords: A Journey from Furniture Maker to Builder

Welcome to the Capewell Harpsichords website!

I was fortunate enough to spend my formative years alongside my father, Simon Capewell, who is a bespoke furniture maker and antique restorer. During this time, I learned the art of furniture making and sharpened the skills needed to perform fine furniture. I was then lucky enough to work full-time for my father producing bespoke furniture in Shakespeare Country.

I then emigrated to the United States in 2002 and eventually began working as a paramedic. I still continue to function as a medic in some capacity, which allows me to provide care to those most in need.

My affinity for the harpsichord began in about 1988. We were riding in the car, when ‘Golden Brown’ by The Stranglers began to play on the radio. I was amazed by the sound of the instrument playing in the song and asked my mother what it was, ‘a harpsichord’, she replied.

Fast-forward to today, and I am now a builder of these fantastic instruments. I build them in Annapolis, Maryland, in my home-based workshop. It can take a few months to make an instrument, but, to me, this is something that cannot be rushed.

Please feel free to reach out to me any time about the instruments I make, my timeline, current projects, or general enquiries.

Best, Alistair
